Gerald Francis

RCT Liberal Democrats have chosen Gerald Francis as our candidate for the Cynon Valley constituency

I married in 1971 and have four daughters and seven grandchildren.

My father was a miner in the Llynfi Valley and I now live in Gilfach Goch in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

My working life was in the plumbing and heating industry starting as an apprentice at 16 to running my own business and then becoming a lecturer in plumbing at further education colleges.

The most enjoyable aspect of my work has been helping others from getting peoples heating working in the middle of winter to training the next generation of plumbers and retraining servicemen and women who have been made redundant or finished their service.

For 12 years I have served actively as a County and District Councillor, I was also a member of a Community Health Council for 8 years.

Away from politics and work my wife and I fostered children in need. My life experiences have convinced me that our Health and Social Care services will work more efficiently for our communities when amalgamated.

I can also see that there is a greater need to support victims of violence and bullying especially domestic abuse.

I have enjoyed playing sport, especially Rugby, and want to ensure others have the same opportunity and encouragement.

Now I value time spent with our family and walking and the RCT community.

Our Health service needs improving, I want to see it properly funded, I want waiting times cut especially for the most urgent cases. We need to sure we train enough of medical staff for the future as well as making sure we have enough critical care and urgent care beds.

I want to see greater investment to reduce the risk of flooding especially here in the Valleys. Welsh Lib Dems want to create a package of investment of £1bn per year to fight the climate emergency. This will create new jobs in the process through construction and flood prevention schemes.

Welsh Lib Dems have ambitious plans to protect our natural environment and biodiversity through reforestation, wildlife conservation and by protecting more of our open public green spaces.

If elected I will put recovery first for the Cynon Valley. I will fight to ensure that carers in our community are properly supported and are paid the real living wage. I will fight to ensure that the extra funding our schools have received, thanks to Lib Dem Education Minister Kirsty Williams, is maintained. I will work constructively with RCT council to improve our town and village centres along with our local leisure facilities. I will make sure that Transport for Wales delivers the promised new trains and four services per hour to Cardiff the area so desperately need. I will also champion local regeneration initiatives to make our valleys a more attractive place to live, with the aspiration of attracting new jobs and investment.
